People living with dementia often feel marginalised by labelling-words like “sufferer”. One of the best ways we can stem widespread use of these terms is to challenge their use in the media.
The primary purpose of this project is to identify the UK media sources that consistently refer to “dementia sufferers”, or that use similarly isolating terms, when describing people living with dementia. In addition, the website provides a simple call-to-action method to hold publishers to account for the language they use.
At the bottom of each card of content is a red button - - that lets you tweet the publisher, flagging up the associated article.
To get started, click on the ‘2017’ or ‘2016’ links above. This will bring you to the ‘Articles’ tab view of the year in question. You can then filter the content by dragging the markers on the ‘Article date’ range slider, by looking for words used in headlines with the ‘Search’ box, or by choosing at least one option from the ‘Publication’ drop down list. You can also combine filters.
If you click on the ‘Statistics’ tab alongside the ‘Articles’ one, you will see the number of articles that have been flagged up for each publication.
